Medical Error and Technologies Research Workshop

The Meta-network exists to develop in a multidisciplinary environment the research agenda for the analysis of medication error and relevant technologies (see network web site at www.meta-network.org). The network is funded for two years from January 2004 by UK research councils (MRC, ESRC, EPSRC) and is one of 5 such networks aimed at increasing the volume and variety of research in the area of patient safety.

We are organising a free one day research workshop at the LSE in Central London on Wednesday the 3 November 2004. The workshop aims to provide an opportunity for new researchers in this broad area and associated areas to meet and discuss their work.. We are particularly interested in attracting current research students working in the field of patient safety, medication error, or analysis and evaluation of technologies within healthcare settings, or who feel that their work in whatever area (finance, engineering etc.) may have some relevance or resonance with these topics. The underlying discipline may be medical, scientific or social; the network already includes, for example, researchers from pharmacy, medicine, nursing, information systems, sociology, economics, and mathematical modelling. The invitation is also extended beyond current research students to any persons who are at an early stage of their work in this field, or who feel that they may contribute and benefit from participation, including postdoctoral researchers.

The day will be organised around a programme of brief presentations by participants and group discussion. Participants are expected to provide an extended abstract of their work, planned or underway (350-750 words) ahead of the event, and selected participants will be asked to make a short 10-5 minute presentation on the day. The event will close with an early evening social event.
